Studio Visits for Children

We have enjoyed a parade of children through the studio since we opened. We welcome groups from preschools, local schools and camps to explore a working pottery and to watch Jeff throw pots. It's necessary to keep the group small (less than 10) so everyone can crowd around the wheel and see. Call first to determine a good time to bring a group. Older goups are also welcomed.

Our daughters (shown here in the playhouse they eventually sold to a local grandmother) grew up watching us make pots, and both of them have drawn on our work since they were very small. As time went by, people have seen their work and asked to bring their own emerging artists in to make some things for themselves. I really enjoy this process and welcome children to come make their own decorations on our pots.

Drawing on Calistoga Pots

It’s best if I can have the pieces ready for the kids to work on before they get overly concerned about making it "perfect", so please call ahead to select shapes and colors. Even better, bring them in a day before to choose for themselves and to have time to think about what images they’d like to do “in rondo”. I give the child a magic marker to draw on the glazed and waxed pot, then carve out their lines and inlay a contrasting glaze. We charge the same price we would charge for each shape from the “inlaid” list on the pricelist. Generally they are finished very quickly, so plan on staying while they work.

The other thing we like to do with kids is hand or footprint plates.
